The film is the love story of two famous Italian writers of the early 20th century, Sibilla Aleramo and Dino Campana. Sibilla’s mother committed suicide when she was in her teens. Her abusive husband forced her to part with her only child. Her unhappy teens and early adulthood, does not make Sibilla fragile and confused – instead, she is a charming and independent woman in her forties. After drifting in and out of brief but intense relationships, she meets the much younger Dino. An engrossing love affair follows, where the intensity of passion, gives way to a consuming fire that extinguishes that which it creates.

RTC, ICCR, 9 A, Ho Chi Minh Sarani,
Kolkata - 700071. on Thursday, at 6.30 p.m.
As a part of Tagore’s 150th Birth Anniversary celebrations, Rangakarmee launched 'Rabindra Rangayatra' with two home productions 'Chandalika' and 'Manasi'.
Reworked by Usha Ganguly, Rangakarmee’s 'Chandalika' bypasses the commonly performed dance - drama, spotlighting the inexplicably neglected original prose play written in 1933. In this first Hindi version of Chandalika in decades, Usha Ganguly contrasts the mother as a coarse and cynical woman, with her daughter Prakriti as a delicate and sensitive girl, yet to realise the ways of the world. While showing the conflict of love in its varied forms, the play shows the stark realities of society - disparity, prejudice, exploitation and the universal search for love and happiness. This makes Chandalika written in 1933, relevant even today.
