Tagore Beyond Frontiers, a three day festival, organized by the RTC, ICCR, Kolkata from December 4-6, 2009, was the curtain raiser for the forthcoming year-long celebrations in India and abroad, which will culminate in the poet’s 150th birth anniversary in 2011. The festival engaged the multiple venues of the RTC in holding academic seminars with illustrated lectures from eminent academics from India as well as participants from UK, Canada, Hungary, Romania, Bangladesh, and Germany. The three cultural programmes were specially chosen to focus on the universal appeal of Tagore which goes beyond frontiers."The Child" presented on the 4th of December is the only English poem of Tagore which was set to choreography."Natir Puja", presented on December 5, from Bangladesh is on a Buddhist theme which speaks of tolerance beyond limiting religious differences. "Dak Ghar" which was presented on the 6th of December was an outstanding presentation in Manipuri language
The exhibitions included the Tagore collection of Rabindra Bharati University which was presented for the first time in digitized form.Tagore’s travels round the world were also exhibited through digitized photographs from Visva Bharati.The exhibition "Limitless within Limits" – Homage to Tagore’s Songs was a unique collection of paintings by Italian artists, inspired by the songs and lyrics of Tagore. There was also a Book Fair on Tagore’s Books. A fashion show – "Thakurbarir Shaj Poshak" – depicting the evolution of dress both for men and women which was initiated by members of the Tagore family, was an attractive event at the Festival.
